Common problems in customs clearance and how to streamline the process.
The following is an analysis of the most common problems that can occur during customs clearance, along with some strategies to expedite the process.
Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation Lack of accurate information or errors in documents (invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, etc.) is one of the most common causes of delays. For example, the absence of INCOTERMS, errors in tariff classification or improper inclusion of VAT on exports can lead to problems and penalties.
- Tariff classification errors. Errors in tariff classification occur when an inappropriate tariff code is assigned to a good, which can result in incorrect customs duties, penalties and delays in customs clearance.
- Errors in the original documentation. If there is an error in a certificate, license or authorization for the type of product and/or destination, the correct documentation may be required.
- Absence of original documentation. Sometimes the original documentation travels with the merchandise, but in other cases, as in the case of maritime shipments, it is usually brought forward to the destination to expedite the procedures, so that the merchandise may not be properly documented when passing through Customs. If this happens, the goods cannot be definitively cleared until the original signed and stamped documentation arrives at Customs.
